Technology
Dance Technology is a vital part of the dance department’s teaching and learning, and especially for preparing our students for competitive career advantages. Two primary parts of dance technology at Wayne State University are the Dance Media Center (DMC) and the Digital Dance Literacy (DDL) curriculum. Unlike most undergraduate programs in dance, the department’s innovative approach ties important technology skills and advances to current required coursework in the dance major curriculum. Rather than just one survey course in dance technology, Wayne dancers acquire skills in digital music and sound design, video editing and camera techniques, graphic design, dance production technology, Telematic (Internet2) performance, and webpage creation throughout five core courses in the dance major program.
Dance Media Center
In September 2004, the department opened its state-of-the-art Dance Media Center (DMC), which serves as a dedicated computer lab space exclusively for dance majors’ enhanced artistic and educational outcomes. The DMC provides dance majors with 21 Macintosh computer stations (G5 iMac Power PC & Intel), video and audio dubbing platforms, digital video cameras, faculty teaching pod with projection options, seminar room, and resource library. Many dance classes are held in this space and dance majors complete assignments, pursue independent creative projects and research, and work on their culminating senior Digital Dance Portfolio in the DMC.

Digital Dance Literacy
With the opening of the Dance Media Center, a student-centered approach to technology drives the department’s innovative Digital Dance Literacy (DDL) curriculum, an award-winning program that integrates technology skills into five core courses in the dance major program. The DDL curriculum allows students to develop and refine advanced technology skills in sound design, music composition, video dance, website design, technology-assisted choreography and performances approaches, and graphic and promotional design. Empowered with these new skills, WSU dancers illustrate their ability to dance beyond the physical stage and onto the global arena.
