The American Ballet Theatre is the nation's premiere dance company. Founded in 1940, the company has been the home of many of the world's best dancers, including Natalia Makarova, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Cynthia Gregory. American Ballet Theatre is known internationally for establishing an American identity for ballet through works choreographed by such artists as Agnes de Mille, George Balanchine, and Twyla Tharp. Today the American Ballet Theatre continues to be the destination of choice for the world's most accomplished dancers.

Greetings and Congratulations for being selected to study with the American Ballet Theatre – Detroit Summer Intensive.


Parents and guardians, it is a pleasure to provide you with this initial information, prepared to give you an idea of the ABT - Detroit Summer Intensive. You will find information about Wayne State University Housing and frequently asked questions. Be sure to visit the ABT-DSI Blog which will serve as a "message board" for pertinent information throughout the intensive and keep you up-to-date with what is happening.

Your initial deposit secures your room. If you wish to request a specific ABT student as a room mate, look for further guidelines in the information mailing.

The ABT – Detroit Summer Intensive students are housed in Atchison Hall, located at 5110 Anthony Wayne Drive on the WSU campus.

All ABT students are assigned an ABT Chaperone who also resides in Atchison Hall for the duration of the intensive. The chaperones provide around-the-clock supervision of ABT students including the daily calendar, recreational excursions and weekends.

During the four-week program students will take class in the state-of-the-art studios at Wayne State University and perform ABT repertory on the stunning Detroit Opera House stage. The Detroit Summer Intensive is geared toward the refinement of intermediate/advanced dancers, ages 12-18. This year’s Michigan Intensive will feature additional master classes taught by Melissa Allen Bowman, Director of Summer Intensives.

CURRICULUM
The ABT Summer Intensive curriculum will include both high level technique classes and lecture courses on subjects critical to the development of a well-rounded dancer. Classes include ballet technique, pointe, pas de deux/partnering, variations, men's class, modern, character, original choreography, ABT repertoire, pilates, hip hop, dance history, acting, music theory, dance improvisation and nutrition/health
